The International Federation of Journalists and the Pacific Freedom Forum called for the “Fiji military regime” to stop censoring the media.  According to the IFJ’s press release, “thousands of news reports have been censored” since the initial military censors were implemented in 2009.

IFJ’s general secretary, Aidan White, is quoted as saying:

“We urge the Fiji military regime to abandon this two-fold system of tight restrictions on the media, and instead move to foster an independent, ethical media culture.”

Fiji is ranked 149th of 178 countries on Reporters without Borders 2010 press freedom index.
