A Tanzanian journalist called on Tanzania’s Media Council to have more power, IPP Media reported.

The journalist, Nyaronyo Kicheere, commented at an ethics conference that the council needs to have “power” so that it could enforce ethics violations.

He stated: “The MCT must be given teeth so that it can punish those who breach professional ethics without interference from the government.”

Kicheere also advocated journalists’ duty to the public as opposed to advertisers.
