The Poynter Institute’s Jeff Sonderman advised about how to manage social media accounts. One of his seven suggestions called for media outlets to create a “best practices” list for handling its social media accounts.

For example, Sonderman suggested news outlets have their social media posters discuss:

“When and how often you want to post items; how much time to leave between posts; what to do with news tips; how to handle complaints or requests for corrections; how to correct erroneous social media posts.”

Also, Sonderman called for news outlets to ensure whoever is behind the social media account is “part of, or closely tied to,the reporters and editors” since “Twitter is a reporting tool.”
