Utah daily newspaper the Deseret News apologized for a college newspaper insert, Poynter’s Jim Romenesko wrote.

The newspaper stated that the “insert fell far below Deseret News editorial standards” and was “uncivil and sophomoric.”  According to the apology notice, University of Utah’s the Daily Utah Chronicle’s insert “was mistakenly inserted.”

The Daily Utah Chronicle responded that the Deseret News and the Salt Lake Tribune have published Chronicle‘s “Rivalry Guide” insert “for the past four years” and called the Deseret News’ apology “shocking.” The Salt Lake Tribune described the insert as containing “references” to the rivalries between University of Utah and Brigham Young University.
