The New York Times issued a lengthy correction to its June 17 profile on Russian gay rights campaigner Nikolai Alekseyev. According to the Times’ correction, its article incorrectly reported Switzerland’s same-sex marriage law, Alekseyev’s “marital status and his citizenship.”

Switzerland’s law doesn’t allow same-sex marriage, but same-sex couples can have “registered partnerships,” which don’t grant marriage rights like “automatic Swiss citizenship to a non-Swiss in a registered partnership with a Swiss,” according to the Times.

Further, the Times corrected its incorrect statement that Alekseyev “is married to his Swiss partner and has citizenship in Switzerland.”  It appears that all references to Switzerland and Swiss law have been removed from the article.
