The Asian American Journalists Association issued a Feb. 22 “media advisory” for reporting on Jeremy Lin.

Lin is a professional basketball player for the New York Knicks. We wrote over the weekend when ESPN apologized for three “chink in the armor” references to Lin.

The Asian American Journalists Association advised that before reporting on Lin, media outlets “Stop to think: Would a similar statement be made about an athlete who is Caucasian, African American or Latino? ”

The group also advised media outlets don’t stereotype and “use caution when discussing Lin’s physical characteristics.”

The association also created a list of facts about Lin — like he is “Asian American, not Asian (more specifically Taiwanese American).”
