These are the 77 Newsday Stories by Kevin Deutsch with 109 Missing Sources

Newsday revealed Wednesday the results of its nearly five-month review of Kevin Deutsch’s crime reporting for the newspaper. As iMediaEthics reported, Newsday said it couldn’t find 109 sources from 77 stories.

iMediaEthics went through Deutsch’s archive at Newsday to look at the 77 stories. It’s noteworthy that the missing sources are from stories throughout his four-year tenure at the newspaper, not just at one point. Deutsch’s first byline for Newsday was April 10, 2012, and his first missing source was from a story datelined April 20, 2012. His last byline for Newsday was August 30, 2016, and his most recent missing source was from a story datelined August 20, 2016.

Another key observation: In several cases, missing sources involved two members of a family, such as siblings and parents. iMediaEthics will continue to report on this story.

In each of these cases, the source or sources in question appear to still be in the story and Newsday‘s editor’s note is posted at the bottom with the name of the person who can’t be verified.

Below, iMediaEthics has listed all the stories with their datelines and the names of the sources Newsday couldn’t find.

Read iMediaEthics’ full investigation thus far into Deutsch and his reporting. In April, iMediaEthics reported that we were unable to confirm the identities of 14 of his sources from Newsday, Newsweek, New York Daily News and the New York Times. Reviews of Deutsch’s work by Newsweek and New York Daily News are apparently still ongoing.
