Afghanistan Govt. Sets up Media Committee for Ethics Standards

Afghanistan’s Ministry of Information and Culture set up “committee to oversee Afghanistan’s media ethics,” according to “Afghanistan’s first 24-hour station dedicated to news and current affairs” TOLO News.

Minister Sayed Makhdoom Rahin called for media self-regulation and is quoted as saying:

“However there should be a decision made regarding ethics and journalism standards, a decision which should be considered by media officials.”

Earlier this month, Reuters reported that the ministry recently “agreed to some softening of media restrictions” after complaints by journalists over “special courts for alleged media violations and a clause that proposed restriction on foreign programming on radio and TV.”
