Asiana Airlines Not Going to Sue KTVU for Reporting Racist Names for Crash Pilots

Asiana Airlines said that it won’t sue Bay Area Fox-affiliate KTVU over the racist names it wrongly reported last week that the names of four pilots in the crash of Flight 213 were Captain Sum Ting Wong, Bang Ding Ow, Ho Lee Fuk, and Wi Tu Lo, according to Mediaite.

In a July 17 statement published by Reuters, Asiana Airlines said:

“Asiana Airlines has decided not to proceed with the case since KTVU has issued a formal apology and in order for us to focus all our efforts on managing the aftermath of the accident.”

On Sunday, an Asiana Airlines representative, Ki Won Suh, confirmed with iMediaEthics that Asiana, at that time, was “considering legal action” over the false name claims because the story was “demeaning.”

As iMediaEthics wrote, the station apologized numerous times for its error. KTVU said it had fact checked the names with the National Transportation Safety Board, and the NTSB later admitted that an intern had told the station the names were legitimate.
