Baltimore Sun Columnist Admits to Self-Plagiarism

Baltimore Sun columnist Jacques Kelly told readers in a March 16 column that he is going on “new writing path” and that he often self-plagiarized in his columns, Poynter’s Craig Silverman noted.

He wrote:

“In many of my columns, I repeated sentences and entire passages from columns that I considered my old standbys.  My motivation was to give my readers what I thought they wanted. But it was disingenuous to include parts of previous columns word for word without telling the reader they had been published before, which is against Baltimore Sun policy.”

Poynter’s Silverman noted that Kelly didn’t offer any details about the reason behind his disclosure of plagiarism and that the newspaper wouldn’t provide any detail about the incident.
