Center for Investigative Reporting: Transparency Key with Anonymous Sources

The “nonprofit investigative reporting organization” Center for Investigative Reporting detailed its policy largely against using anonymous sources in stories in recent Q & A with the Bay Citizen, which is “part of the center.”

The center’s editorial director Mark Katches said  the center’s reporters “almost never quote anonymous sources” but that they “wouldn’t rule it out in the case of exceptional news value.”  Katches added that “Transparency is extremely important in those rare cases where we grant exceptions to the policy” so when they do they will “explain…why we decided to grant an excepton.”
