Cuba Bloggers see sites Unblocked

“More than 40” Cuban “dissent bloggers’ websites” were unblocked, the Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas reported.

The unblocking was a “surprise” but “the question is why and for how long” the sites will be unblocked.  Cuban blogger Yoani Sanchez of Generacion Y blog called the unblocking  “the end of ‘the long night of censorship,'” the Miami Herald noted.

According to the Herald, Sanchez and her husband, blogger Reinaldo Escobar, think the unblocking is linked to the Informatica 2011 fair, which was held in Havana Feb. 7- 11.

Sanchez blogged: “After three years, my virtual space is again sighted from inside Cuba.   I don’t know the reasons for the end to this blockade, although I can speculate that the celebration of the 2011 Havana International Computer Science Fair has brought many foreign guests and it is better to show them an image of tolerance, of supposed openings in the realm of citizen expression.”.
