Illinois Student Newspaper Fires Reporter for Fake Quotes

The Bradley Scout fired a reporter for publishing fake quotes in a college sports article.

In an April 24 statement, the Scout said the student reporter included fake quotes for a student athlete and coach. The Scout said it fired the reporter. The statement reads:

“In the April 22 edition of The Scout, we unknowingly printed an article with fabricated quotes. The article, “Disappointing week for track & field, who head to Virginia,” included quotes from a student athlete and the head coach, all of which were fabricated. The Scout immediately severed ties with the writer of the article and apologizes for this egregious error.”

The Bradley Scout is a student-run newspaper for Bradley University, a university in Peoria, Illinois.

iMediaEthics has contacted the Scout for more information about this incident including how it found out about the fabrication, if the writer had written other pieces for the paper, and if so, what review was conducted of that work.
