An Irish judge ruled that the Irish Times, Irish Independent, Evening Herald, Irish Examiner and Irish Daily Star can report on 22-year-old Irish student’s injunction to “prohibit the rebroadcasting or republishing of a video clip that he said defamed him by alleging he was guilty of evading a taxi fare,” the Guardian’s Roy Greenslade reported. The Irish Examiner noted that the judge “refused” the student’s injunction order.
According to the Irish Times, the student in question was misidentified as the person who skipped out on a taxi fare by “an anonymous author on the internet.” Greenslade and the Irish Times noted that the student said he was in Japan when the video was made and that the taxi driver confirmed that the student in question wasn’t the person in the video.
The Irish Daily Mail explained that the taxi driver put the video on YouTube and that the anonymous commenter named the student in question.
Greenslade reported that the student wanted the injunction because he didn’t want to be named for reasons of “privacy and his good name.”
