Student Press Law Center wrote Oct. 7 that a Nebraska judge dismissed a lawsuit claiming that University of Nebraska student newspaper the Daily Nebraskan libeled former Nebraska regent Robert J. Prokop in its editorials claiming he plagiarized.
According to Student Press Law Center, the judge ruled that the 2006 editorial “failed to meet the legal standard for libel in Nebraska: that the published information was wrong and the writers had doubts of the information’s accuracy.” The former regent was accused of plagiarizing his 1972 article for the Douglas County Gazette from the book “Homosexuality: Disease or Way of Life?” Prokop claimed that he told the newspaper “part of his article copied the book, but the newspaper did not publish it.”
