Links ‘Should be as routine in our stories as quotes,’ NYTimes says

The New York Times should do better about providing links in its online articles, standards editor Phil Corbett wrote Dec. 16.

“For all our progress in digital journalism, we sometimes still neglect one of its most basic tools: the link,” Corbett wrote, citing several recent examples of Times articles that failed to include helpful links to contextualize and offer evidence for reports.

He went on, “Links provide background information, buttress our reporting, point to related material, aid search and help ensure proper credit and attribution. They are easy to include and cost nothing.

“They should be as routine in our stories as quotes, and for many reporters they are. But we still miss many opportunities.”
