Malaysian Prime Minister Backs Press Council, Ethics Code Development

Malaysia’s Prime Minister called for the government to make sure there aren’t “double standards when regulating the print and online media,” according to the Malaysian Insider.

The prime minister, Datuk Seri Najib, said Malaysia would get rid of its yearly “printing license” for print publications, so as to avoid any double standard, Bernama reported.

Najib also supported the suggestions for a press council and ethics code, Malaysian Insider reported.  Asia One reported Najib as saying: “It is up to the industry to self-regulate when it comes to editorial professionalism. The Government will accept any suggestions brought forth with an open heart and mind.”

We wrote in February when Malaysia’s Journalists Union proposed a “fair reporting pledge.”
