New Guidelines at Malta’s Public Broadcaster Say No Political Support On or Off Air

Malta’s Public Broadcasting Services is releasing its “Guidelines on the Obligation of Due Impartiality,” the Times of Malta reported.

The guidelines call for PBS journalists to avoid “off-air activities that can give rise to doubts about their objectivity on-air and towards what is transmitted,” for example.

In a separate report, the Times of Malta explained that PBS journalists can’t “express public support for any political party, not even off-air.”

The guidelines also include: “Journalists, presenters and producers are not expected to be neutral on every controversial issue, but care is to be taken that they do not favour one opinion as opposed to another in such a manner that gives advantage to that opinion.”

According to Malta Today, the guidelines take effect in June.
