NYTimes Mixes up Good Burger’s Kel with Teenager

The New York Times thought a still image from the movie Good Burger starring Kenan Thompson and Kel Mitchell was actually a picture of an everyday, real teenager working at a real burger restaurant.

Good Burger is a 1997 movie that spun off of Nickelodeon’s All That show.

The Times made the error in a Nov. 5 report on “Alex from Target,” the Texas Target-employed teenager whose photo went viral this month.

A Nov. 10 correction on the article reads:

“An article on Thursday about the latest Internet sensation of ‘Alex from Target,’ a picture of a teenager bagging merchandise at the retailer that went viral online, described incorrectly a subsequent Internet posting of ‘Kel from Good Burger.’ It was a frame from the 1997 film ‘Good Burger’ starring the actor Kel Mitchell; it was not a photograph of a teenager in a job.”

In addition, the Times corrected another error in the article – Alex from Target’s last name. That Nov. 13 correction states: “An article last Thursday about a teenager from Texas who has become a social media sensation known as ‘Alex from Target’ misstated his surname. He is Alex Lee, not Laboeuf.”
