Photog Gerald Herbert Helped Victim before Photographing, Says he was a ‘Person First and a Journalist Second’

In post for the News Guild, Janelle Hartman recounted how Associated Press photographer Gerald Herbert decided to hold off on taking pictures of a car on fire until he helped the driver first.

Herbert said of the August incident in Mississippi that:

“In this situation, there was no question that my efforts were needed to help rescue someone from imminent death…This situation called for me to be a person first and a journalist second.”
