Reuters Changes Retraction Practices

Reuters has announced new practice for handling retractions, Poynter’s Steve Myers reported.

Under the new retraction practices, when an article will be retracted, Reuters will put a note at the top of the article, “strike through the incorrect portion of the article” and note “if another article is pending.”

The change comes after Reuters retracted David Cay Johnston’s column on News Corp’s taxes.  In that case, Reuters announced via an advisory that it would be pulling the column, but the column remained on Reuters “untouched for another couple of hours.”

“Links to the story resulted in 404 errors, and still do. That evening, Reuters posted a followup column by Johnston in which he acknowledged his error and described how it happened,” Poynter noted.
