Should Bolivian Journalists Use A Dead 14-Year-Old’s Facebook Photo?

Is it OK for the news media to use a 14-year-old’s photo from Facebook in reports about the minor’s death?

That question is circulating in Bolivian media after a 14-year-old was killed by fireworks at a football match, according to blog Global Voices Online.

Journalist Fabiola Chambi argued on Twitter that it’s “unethical” and “against morality,” whereas editor Ruben Atahuichi proposed that the ethics of publication is “depending on the connotations” of how the photograph represents the minor.

What do you think?

A few years ago, the Danish Press Council decided that journalists cannot use information posted on Facebook accounts that have privacy restrictions against public viewing.
