SPJ Ethics Chair: Can Ethics Code Apply to Social Media?

Society of Professional Journalists ethics chair Kevin Smith blogged Sept. 19 about applying the group’s ethics code to social media.

“The Society of Professional Journalists relies on its current ethics code to be a standard-bearer that can be applied to the varied mediums, rather than addressing social media specifically,” Smith wrote, noting that the SPJ and others have questioned if the group should be updated in light of social media.

“Must the code need revised every time technology advances and introduces another form of journalism?” he asked.
