TIME Magazine Apologizes for Non-Latino on Cover about Latinos

TIME magazine apologized, sort of, for featuring non-Latino on its March 5 cover, titled “Yo Decido: Why Latinos will pick the next President.”  The cover image (See above) shows twenty faces of men and women one “would assume are Latinos,” as Yahoo News explained.

The man on the middle of the top row, Michael Schennum, isn’t Latino, according to Yahoo News.   OC Weekly blogged about the issue, noting that Schennum is “a friend” and that he is “half Chinese and Irish and Norwegian. Not Latino. Not even a little bit.”

TIME‘s apology, which seems to include Schennum as part of the blame, given to Yahoo News and OC Weekly, reads:

“Over the course of three days we photographed 151 people for the current cover. We took steps to ensure that everyone self-identified as Latino, that they are registered voters and that they would be willing to answer our questions. If there was a misunderstanding with one of our subjects, we apologize.”
