The Toronto Star’s life and entertainment editor Janet Hurley apologized for the newspaper’s publication of the f-word in graphic, Star public editor Kathy English reported.
Hurley is quoted as saying: “We apologize profusely for the inadvertent inclusion of swearing in the Grid graphic…It does not meet the Star’s standards for use of language.”
English explained that the graphic was created by the Star‘s “sister publication” the Grid, which is “edgier” than the Star. The Star runs “the Grid’s ‘Food Spy’ graphic” weekly but didn’t spot the obscenity. The newspaper’s policy calls for no “swear words” unless they’re “direct quotations,” but “even then, the word is not to be spelled out in whole.”
