The Toronto Star’s public editor, Kathy English, compiled some of the Canadian paper’s more prominent mistakes during 2010 in her recent column here.
English noted that in 2010, the newspaper ran 328 corrections — fewer than 2009’s 347 corrections and 2008’s 425 corrections. Acknowledging that 328 corrections is still 328 errors, she wrote: “That’s less than one identified published error for every day the Star publishes. Not a bad track record given that we publish the equivalent of a book daily.”
Some noteworthy errors the newspaper made in 2010 included the misidentifying of Toronto Transit Commission union president Bob Kinnear with actor Greg Kinnear, the labeling of a baseball bat as a gun, and the newspaper’s incorrectly identifying the victim of a murder.
However, English called 2010 “the year of tweeted errors.”
