Ugandan media council issues guidelines for reporting on coronavirus

The Ugandan Media Council has issued new guideline for reporting on coronavirus.

The guidelines, according to Ugandan news site PML Daily, include banning live coverage of press conferences to encourage social distancing.

Instead, the council has asked government agencies to provide live feeds that news outlets can use.

Tips include avoiding sensational language, speculation, and “gory images that feed into stereotypes.” Ugandan journalists are also advised to get information from multiple experts, to avoid derogatory language and provide data for readers. The guidelines also recommend journalists include facts when reporting on rumors and avoid covering all rumors.

The council tweeted its tips.
