The BBC “withheld crucial Mark Duggan shooting footage,” the UK Press Gazette reported.
According to a Guardian report at the time of Duggan’s death, the 29-year-old black man was killed by police in August 2011 and his death “sparked the weekend’s London riots.”
The BBC apparently has “more than five minutes of unseen video footage” of Duggan’s shooting that “could reveal new details of the incident,” according to the Press Gazette.
The UK Independent Police Complaints Commission commented that it is “extremely concerned that the BBC has been in possession of this footage for nearly nine months and that they chose not to bring it to the attention of the IPCC.”
But, the BBC says that footage “only came to light” recently and it won’t give IPCC its “untransmitted footage” without a “court order.” The BBC is quoted by the Press Gazette as saying: “We would be happy to provide the IPCC with the material we have broadcast following the processes in place via our legal department.”
