BBC apologizes for tweet saying number of Yiddish speakers ‘severely depleted’

The BBC apologized after its World Service Twitter account tweeted, “Yiddish was once spoken by more than 10 million people, but these numbers were severely depleted by the mid-20th century.” Of course, that decline was caused by the Holocaust, which the tweet didn’t note.

The tweet accompanied a program about the Yiddish language.

The BBC declined to comment to iMediaEthics beyond pointing to its apology tweet and the program itself.

The BBC issued an apology tweet Jan. 3 that read, “We have removed an earlier tweet promoting our programme The Forum, Yiddish: A story of survival. The wording wasn’t right and we apologise.”
