Trump’s campaign suing CNN

Donald Trump’s presidential campaign is now suing a third news outlet — CNN — over its opinion article about him.

According to Reuters, the news of the lawsuit came from a Fox News report citing “senior legal adviser for the campaign.”

In question is a June 2019 opinion column by Larry Noble saying the campaign “decided to leave that option on the table” referring to asking for help from Russia. “The lawsuit said the article doesn’t back up Noble’s statement with evidence, and that CNN and Noble had both shown a pattern of bias against Trump,” according to the Associated Press.

Noble’s CNN article was headlined, “Soliciting dirt on your opponents from a foreign government is a crime. Mueller should have charged Trump campaign officials with it.” The article is in the “opinion” section. An editor’s note at the top reads:

“Larry Noble is the former general counsel of the Federal Election Commission (1987-2000). He is a CNN contributor and has served as general counsel of the Campaign Legal Center and executive director of the Center for Responsive Politics. The opinions expressed in this commentary are solely those of the author; view more opinion at CNN.”

A CNN spokesperson declined to comment to iMediaEthics. iMediaEthics has written to the Trump campaign.

Earlier this week, the campaign sued the Washington Post for libel over two opinion articles. In late February, the campaign sued the New York Times over an op-ed.
