CNN cut ties with legal analyst Mark Geragos after news outlets reported, based on anonymous sources, that he was the unnamed co-conspirator named in lawyer Michael Avenatti’s arrest and charging, Mediaite reported.

The Associated Press reported the co-conspirator allegation against Geragos based on “a person familiar with details of the Avenatti investigation.” The New York Times reported it was based on “a person with knowledge of the investigation who requested anonymity because of an inability to speak publicly.” CNN reported it based on “a source familiar.” The Wall Street Journal is credited with breaking the story.

CNN spokesperson Matt Dornic confirmed to iMediaEthics that Geragos is “no longer with CNN.” CNN’s news story noted that Geragos “was a CNN contributor” and “has not been charged with a crime.” iMediaEthics has asked if Geragos was paid and why he left or if he was let go, but didn’t hear back. iMediaEthics has written to Geragos for his side of the story and response to allegations he is the unnamed person in question.

Avenatti was charged with wire fraud, bank fraud and attempted extortion Monday, March 25.
