NPR ombudsman Edward Schumacher-Matos blogged Sept. 12 to remind NPR’s reporters that it is inaccurate to refer to the “Democrat Party,” after a listener complained.

As Schumacher-Matos explained,

“‘Democratic Party’ is correct. ‘Democrat Party’ has a long and infamous history as a slur slung by members of the party supported by that other great slice of the electorate.”

While Schumacher-Matos responded that his review found that NPR’s transcript hadn’t actually included the inaccurate term on air which the viewer “thought she heard,” he used his post as a reminder of the accurate terminology.
