The Mexican Supreme Court dismissed Mexican newspaper La Jornada’s libel lawsuit against magazine Letras Libres, the Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas reported.
The magazine’s March 2004 column “Accomplices of Terror” reportedly “criticized a supposed alliance between the Spanish newspaper Gara — the supposed political arm of the terrorist group ETA — and the Mexican newspaper La Jornada.”
In response, the newspaper sued Letras Libres for libel. However, the Supreme Court ruled Nov. 23, 2011 that since La Jornada is a press outlet with “the widest freedom to rebuke the actions of public figures,” it needs to “a wide scrutiny” of itself.
According to the Knight Center, this Supreme Court ends all litigation on this incident.
