Politico’s David Catanese apologized in a memo for his tweets on Todd Akin’s rape comments, the Huffington Post reported.

As we wrote, Politico announced that Catanese wouldn’t report on Akin because of his tweets.  Catanese wrote, for example, that he was “gonna (ask for it) & defend @ToddAkin for argument’s sake.”

The memo, posted in full on the Huffington Post, acknowledges the “hurt I caused with my remarks” and adds that “I fully understand the reasons for their offense.”  Catanese wrote:

“The entire incident was a misjudgment on my part. It was never my intent to lend support to Rep. Akin’s inexcusable remarks…

“I am deeply sorry and apologize for the distress and distraction I have caused in the newsroom and promise to learn from this experience to better express my journalistic intent with greater precision and sensitivity.”
