New York magazine accused actress Priyanka Chopra of being a “global scam artist” in a story about her recent marriage to singer Nick Jonas. Now the magazine has apologized and unpublished its article.

The article by Mariah Smith read, in part, according to the Guardian, that “Nicholas Jonas married into a fraudulent relationship against his will this past Saturday.”

A New York Magazine spokesperson pointed iMediaEthics to the apology.

The article also claimed “All Nick wanted was a possible fling with Hollywood’s latest It Woman, but instead he wound up staring straight at a life sentence with a global scam artist.”

According to an archive of an updated version of the article, she also questioned, “Is Priyanka and Nick’s love real?” and claimed an early message from Chopra to Jonas suggested Jonas was just one of “a short list of Hollywood men that she and her team would test out for a possible romance.” The article also remarked that the  couple was “finding ways for their ‘love’ [to] make them money.” India Today published screenshots of the article before it was removed.

In a Dec. 4 editor’s note, New York‘s “The Cut” section apologized and said “the whole piece missed the mark.” The note reads:

Last night, the Cut published a post about Nick Jonas and Priyanka Chopra’s relationship that shouldn’t have gone up. We’ve received dozens of messages from readers expressing their anger. We want you to know that we hear you and we’re sorry. The whole piece missed the mark. There is no good explanation for this other than human error and poor judgement. This was a mistake, and we apologize to our readers and to Priyanka and Nick.”
