The Associated Press issued an advisory Dec. 5 announcing its “Holiday Style Guide.”  The guide says it “encompasses Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa and New Year’s festivities” and how AP style users should spell, quote and capitalize these terms.

For example, the AP says to capitalize Champagne, lowercase hallelujah unless it’s in a song title, and spell Kriss Kringle with two s’s, not one.

According to the guide, menorah isn’t capitalized and Xmas isn’t an OK shorthand for Christmas. Regifting, the practice of “passing along an unwanted present to someone else,” made the style guide.  See the whole guide here.
