Australian news site News.com.au claimed a judge slut-shamed a defendant for her outfit earlier this year.

But now, News.com.au has retracted its claim and article and apologized to the judge.

The May 21 apology reads:

“An opinion piece published on January 31 stated Magistrate Jaye Carney was “slut shaming” when Her Honour criticised the outfit of a female defendant appearing before Sutherland Local Court. This was incorrect and the article has been removed.

“Prior to her appointment to the bench, Magistrate Carney was a long term advocate of women’s causes and is committed to gender equality before the law. We sincerely apologise to Magistrate Carney for the hurt and distress she has suffered.”

iMediaEthics has written to Sutherland Local Court and News.com.au for more information. Sutherland Local Court responded that Carney declined to comment.
